Scrappy Log Cabin Quilt from A Little Bit Biased

A scrappy, classic quilt is my favorite kind of quilt.
So when Liza Taylor (of Liza Taylor Handmade) announced
that she was hosting a Scrappy Log Cabin Quilt-Along
in 2022 - I couldn't resist joining.  And even though I am way
behind schedule, I am so glad I participated!

I took my color palette inspo from some beautiful yardage
I had in my stash.  It's from the Kismet collection by Sharon Holland
for Art Gallery Fabrics and I used it for the back of my quilt.

I knew I wanted a layout that created diagonal rows of
saturated prints ...

Finishing the Log Cabin Quilt of Valor from From My Carolina Home

The lovely temperatures last week made quilting a joy with the windows open. A gentle breeze filtered through the open windows bringing fresh air in the basement. I was able to correct the tension issues, and quilting went fairly smoothly after that.

I worked on it off and on through the week. It was nice to advance to the bottom, knowing I was getting close to done.

The final rows of pantograph went quickly. This one is Fascination from Urban Elementz.

When the quilting was done, I removed it from the frame and trimmed it. The thread color did well ...

Friday check in: Mme. Curie, a flimsy + OMG April from With Strings Attached

"Meet Madame Curie" was Lynn Rymarz portrayal at yesterday's Clara Cummings Book Club luncheon. The setting was 1920 when Marie Curie came to the U.S.   The Association of Collegiate Alumnae, as AAUW was then called, raised $100,000 to buy one gram of radium for her research.  Since many AAUW members come to Clara Cummings it was very fitting.   Dr. Curie sought medical applications to treat cancer but radium found commercial uses, too.

The second character in Lynn's program was one of the   Radium Girls who painted watch faces and clock dials at the Radium Dial factory ...

Midweek: courthouse steps from With Strings Attached

Happy National Library Week!   Zion Woman's Club members were at the Zion-Benton Public Library at 9 a.m. Monday to give donuts to the staff in honor of Library Workers' Day.  (LWD was actually Tuesday but the library was closed Tuesday for planned construction.)   ZWC led the effort the create the Zion Memorial Public Library in 1937.

Last evening I attended a Zoom program with Will Shortz, the puzzle editor of the New York Times and the NPR Sunday puzzle guy.  It was interesting to learn about his life and career.

He wrote the essay when he was in ...

Weekly update: farewells and new beginnings (with music) from With Strings Attached

2020:  a drive-by birthday parade to honor Sally
Saturday morning I attended the memorial service for Sally Zeit who passed away in December at age 94.  I first met her in AAUW as our branch voter registration chair (coordinating training for voter registrars and then registration events).  She connected my husband to the Lake County chaplaincy agency where he served as a nursing home and hospice chaplain.  We attended many church services for which she was the organist.  But I'd only known her as a fierce and feisty senior citizen.   Her memorial service provided a life story of decades ...

Waterfall II Throw Quilt in Purples! from Busy Hands Quilts

Today I'm sharing a Waterfall II quilt in the Throw size, made in beautiful purples!  I hear from so many of you that Purple is your favorite!

The Waterfall II quilt pattern has unique setting triangles that finish the design clear out to the edges for a truly beautiful finish.

The Waterfall II quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

What is the difference between the Waterfall and Waterfall II quilt patterns??

Waterfall II is designed with a single colorway and uses 7 fabrics total.  The original Waterfall quilt pattern (shown in the picture below) is ...

Log Cabin Finishes from TheEclecticAbuela

I finally finished up my Log Cabin quilts. They are fun to make, and I have plans for more!

First, a very traditional brown/neutral one.

Brown Log Cabin 95" x 95"

Brown Log Cabin (center detail)

Brown Log Cabin (detail)

Brown Log Cabin (detail)

Brown Log Cabin (back and binding detail)

For this quilt I used 1.5" strips (finished at 1"). The center red square is a constant fabric which I also used as binding. The back is a brown paint stroke print with a center panel of fruit and foliage (you can just see it in the ...

Weekly update: entertainment + two finishes from With Strings Attached

Sign of spring:   Mr. and Mrs. Crane let me get very close to snap this picture at Illinois Beach State Park this week.

Yet the day before the cranes I saw fungus on a tree stump in an icy pond.

On Thursday the Clara Cummings Book Club was entertained by Mary Cunningham Logan, widow of Illinois Civil War General John Logan.   Jessica Michna's historical portrayal was so informative!  The Logans both grew up in southern Illinois (the Murphysboro library is named for her). She lived in Carbondale during the Civil War. When Logan was elected to Congress she moved ...

Log Cabin 56, 57, 58, 59, 60 from Virtual Quilter

The Log Cabin project file was one of the early files I opened just for this blog.

I am still amazed at the number of designs I found over 15 years ago, though I am not very impressed with the colour choices I made back then. My thinking was that not too many people would like the colouring enough to steal the designs and claim them as their own. I have since played with the colours in some of the old files and made them more attractive but some of them have too many designs to sit and recolour.

I ...

Interesting.

Wow!

I like the one above, especially the curves in the outer edge!

Love the curves again.

Interesting.

Hard to pick a favourite, but the middle and right of the top row are high on the list!

WINDING ROAD from Q-BITS

For years I have admired and made log cabin quilts.    However, I have never made the curved log cabin variation.

Assembling fabrics for the quilt, I tried to pick colors from my scraps that are not my usual combinations -- trying purples, olives, gold, rust, and brown together.  Of course, it is hard for me to not include red, but tried to keep to a darker, muddy red.  The one piece of quilting advice that my grandmother gave me was, "Every quilt needs a little red!" Can't go against a grandmother's advice.  (Kids are you listening?)

In the interest ...

ยป TheEclecticAbuela

As I mentioned last time, in all my years of quilting, I've never made a Log Cabin quilt before.

I went very traditional with color and layout, and I am basting it for quilting today. This picture only shows a part of it--it is 96" x 96"!

I'll post a better picture when it is completed.

Happy Quilting!

A Couple of Recent Finishes from TheEclecticAbuela

December was a month when I got little done but, I'm trying to make up for it.

Here are two quilts I finished so far this month.

The first is Rolling Waves (82" x 82"). The pattern is from a free, downloadable ebook available HERE. I used only two fabrics for the top (a difficult thing for this scrappy quilter!). The back is a patchwork cheater's cloth.

The quilt is hanging straight down from the fence, but the use of different sizes and shapes of blocks gives ...

Mountain Peaks Throw Quilt in Neutrals! from Busy Hands Quilts

Today I'm sharing this minimalist Mountain Peaks quilt!  This quilt was sewn up last summer as a test quilt for the Mountain Peaks quilt pattern.  The fabrics have tiny flecks of metallic gold for just a bit of a splash.  :)

Mountain Peaks is an easy quilt to make.  This pattern is made with half log cabins and is a spin-off from the Waterfall II quilt pattern, with the addition of sashing between the logs.  The on-point setting with pieced setting triangles create an illusion of mountains.

The "fire" quilt in the background is also made in the Mountain Peaks ...

I'm still here! from Elaine Adair Pieces

* This QOV was donated, as well as 2 kids quilts
* I made a LOT of zip pouches until zipper stash was depleted.
* Made a pleasant drive (2 days) by myself to Indiana to surprise my sister who was making a rest stop in Indiana, on her way from Canada to Florida.  She WAS surprised and due to my weight loss and new, long never-previously-seen curly hair, she didn't reognize me!  It's been a long time since we last had seen each other.
* Picked up a girlfriend on the way home from Indiana to my home in western Nebraska ...

I am so excited about the opportunity to share a blog post today on the Quilters Candy website. In that post, I present a few ways to create the illusion of curves in quilts and share a tutorial and free pattern for The Encompass Quilt.

Waterfall II Throw Quilt in Fire - More Pictures! from Busy Hands Quilts

Today's feature is a Waterfall II quilt in the Fire Version!  The Fire version is inspired by Deanna, a quilter from Oregon who sent me a picture of her quilt, and it was love on fire at first sight!

The Fire version of Waterfall II is made with yellowy-oranges, reds, and deep purple with black sashing.

The Waterfall II quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

The Waterfall II Pattern

The Waterfall II quilt pattern includes two sizes - Throw and Queen - because that's what worked out mathematically to preserve the design.

Quilty Cabins Quilt Pattern - a Throw Quilt in Sweet Picnic! from Busy Hands Quilts

Today I'm sharing this log cabin heart Quilty Cabins quilt!  This is the quilt I made to test the pattern, and I can't believe I haven't shown it to you yet!  Quilty Cabins is a fun pattern to make. :)

This quilt is made with a fat quarter bundle of Sweet Picnic, a lovely blend of purples, teal, orangey-reds and gold with a creamy white background.  The prints are a variety of florals, ginghams, cherries, and butterflies.

Quilty Cabins comes in a ton of quilt sizes and is fun to sew up.  Even with the number of pieces ...
