The lovely temperatures last week made quilting a joy with the windows open. A gentle breeze filtered through the open windows bringing fresh air in the basement. I was able to correct the tension issues, and quilting went fairly smoothly after that.
I worked on it off and on through the week. It was nice to advance to the bottom, knowing I was getting close to done.
The final rows of pantograph went quickly. This one is Fascination from Urban Elementz.
When the quilting was done, I removed it from the frame and trimmed it. The thread color did well ...

Happy National Library Week! Zion Woman's Club members were at the Zion-Benton Public Library at 9 a.m. Monday to give donuts to the staff in honor of Library Workers' Day. (LWD was actually Tuesday but the library was closed Tuesday for planned construction.) ZWC led the effort the create the Zion Memorial Public Library in 1937.
Last evening I attended a Zoom program with Will Shortz, the puzzle editor of the New York Times and the NPR Sunday puzzle guy. It was interesting to learn about his life and career.
He wrote the essay when he was in ...

What is the difference between the Waterfall and Waterfall II quilt patterns??
I finally finished up my Log Cabin quilts. They are fun to make, and I have plans for more!
First, a very traditional brown/neutral one.

For this quilt I used 1.5" strips (finished at 1"). The center red square is a constant fabric which I also used as binding. The back is a brown paint stroke print with a center panel of fruit and foliage (you can just see it in the ...

Yet the day before the cranes I saw fungus on a tree stump in an icy pond.
The Log Cabin project file was one of the early files I opened just for this blog.
I am still amazed at the number of designs I found over 15 years ago, though I am not very impressed with the colour choices I made back then. My thinking was that not too many people would like the colouring enough to steal the designs and claim them as their own. I have since played with the colours in some of the old files and made them more attractive but some of them have too many designs to sit and recolour.

Interesting.
Wow!
I like the one above, especially the curves in the outer edge!
Love the curves again.
Interesting.
Hard to pick a favourite, but the middle and right of the top row are high on the list!
More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.
read moreFor years I have admired and made log cabin quilts. However, I have never made the curved log cabin variation.
Assembling fabrics for the quilt, I tried to pick colors from my scraps that are not my usual combinations -- trying purples, olives, gold, rust, and brown together. Of course, it is hard for me to not include red, but tried to keep to a darker, muddy red. The one piece of quilting advice that my grandmother gave me was, "Every quilt needs a little red!" Can't go against a grandmother's advice. (Kids are you listening?)
As I mentioned last time, in all my years of quilting, I've never made a Log Cabin quilt before.
I went very traditional with color and layout, and I am basting it for quilting today. This picture only shows a part of it--it is 96" x 96"!
I'll post a better picture when it is completed.
Happy Quilting!

Weird but interesting design.
Love the one above!
I like the fourth one above.
And I like the last.

read moreDecember was a month when I got little done but, I'm trying to make up for it.
Here are two quilts I finished so far this month.
The first is Rolling Waves (82" x 82"). The pattern is from a free, downloadable ebook available HERE. I used only two fabrics for the top (a difficult thing for this scrappy quilter!). The back is a patchwork cheater's cloth.

I am so excited about the opportunity to share a blog post today on the Quilters Candy website. In that post, I present a few ways to create the illusion of curves in quilts and share a tutorial and free pattern for The Encompass Quilt.
The blocks in this quilt are small, so today I would like to offer tips for piecing narrow strips. In fact, you might find an idea that improves all of your piecing!
Don’t have the pattern for The Encompass Quilt? Sign up here and it will be emailed to you right away.
